Those with ADHD might make great entrepreneurs

We are happy to present Professor Johan Wiklund - webinar via Zoom.

What do the founders of Virgin, Ikea and Jet Blue have in common? They are all successful entrepreneurs who share an Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Professor Johan Wiklund studies the relationship between entrepreneurship and ADHD. He asserts that the accompanying characteristics of ADHD, such as sensation seeking, risk tolerance, hyper focus and impulsivity, can be assets for entrepreneurs.

Johan has found these individuals often gravitate to business ownership, because they can dictate the parameters of the business to their comfort. They can choose the tasks for which they are best suited and pursue activities they are passionate about. Their impulsivity helps them take risks and act under uncertainty when most people are too worried to do anything. Johan’s conviction is that entrepreneurship can offer a productive career path for people who otherwise have problems in the regular job market.

During his talk, Johan Wiklund will touch upon the following topics:

  • What characterizes people with ADHD?
  • How do the ADHD symptoms relate to success in entrepreneurship?
  • What should a person with ADHD be most concerned with if they pursue entrepreneurship?

Johan Wiklund is Professor of entrepreneurship at Whitman School of Management, Syracuse University, USA and Visiting Professor at DTU Entrepreneurship. His research interests include entrepreneurship and mental health as well as the entry, performance, and exit of entrepreneurial firms. He is Editor-in-Chief for the journal Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.
